“Running Up That Hill” - Rachel Winnick (lead vocal), Anika Erickson (backing vocal)
“Zombie” - Anika Erickson (lead vocal), Rachel Winnick (backing vocal)
“Thriller” - Aaliyah Shambé (lead vocal); Anika Erickson, Ally Dellgren & Chappell Kingsland (backing vocals); Oliver Poveda (narration)
These songs were arranged for WBO’s Halloween Show, an outrageous concert event presented at clubs and festivals in Denver, Colorado each year since 2019. The vocalists are astounding, bringing so much personality and passion to their songs. The arrangements are equally astounding, shifting between cover song, remix, tribute, and expansion into new realms. Producer/Arranger Chappell Kingsland explains:
“This arrangement of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” started with a simple spark - how about if the instruments sounded like they’re running straight up a hill? The basic motive of a rising staccato scale is developed every which way during the course of the piece, culminating in a virtuoso climax which almost obliterates the vocalist in the last chorus. The drum part is extremely varied, making references to the original, but changing dramatically with each section to heighten the mood. Kate Bush herself changed the arrangement of the song for live performances and remixes, so we would love to see what her fans think of this exciting new rendition.
“Zombie” is a standout track from the ‘90s, the only time The Cranberries got super-heavy. Whenever rock songs from previous decades become as famous as this one, they gradually lose some of their edginess and surprise. We aimed to create a fresh take on the song, with an extremely unsettling introduction dominated by synth bass, ambient drumming, and eerie orchestral harmonies. The following choruses and verses have the full group rocking out, with the electric guitar replaced by trumpet and winds, so that the colors have changed but the intensity is maintained. Instead of a final guitar solo, we added a coda as a dialogue between the vocalists, with quick riffs traded between all the instruments.
What can we add to one of the most popular songs of all time? The WBO version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” expands the palette so that we hear all the crucial rock-band and vocal elements joined by orchestral winds, brass and strings. Special touches include instrumental sound effects (bends, slides, and noises) and major surprises in the third verse (shifting from punk noise to light samba to illustrate the meaning behind the lyrics).”
